How to customize the Minimal Black ATS Resume template
The absence of decoration means every heading and bullet should justify its place on the page.
Let whitespace do the organizing
Use spacing between headings and positions rather than heavy boxes or colored side panels. Keep similar gaps before each section and the same indentation for every list. Too much whitespace can make a short resume look empty, while too little can make it hard to scan; balance it according to how much experience you need to include. When editing, use paragraph spacing settings instead of inserting multiple blank lines to create gaps.
Choose plain but meaningful section labels
The template’s quiet style works with direct headings: Professional Experience, Education, Skills, and optional Projects or Certifications. Avoid vague alternatives such as “My Journey” because neither software nor readers benefit from the ambiguity. Bold is useful for job titles and headings, but keep the rest as selectable body text. When you paste content from another resume, remove leftover formatting so the font and spacing remain consistent throughout.
Write sharper bullets
A minimalist layout magnifies weak language. Replace generic words with verifiable specifics. For example, name the system you improved, the audience you served, or the result you achieved; do not invent performance metrics. If several bullets begin with the same phrase, vary the structure where it makes the meaning clearer. A compact skills section should support the experience, not read like an unrelated collection of tools copied from the job advertisement.
Check the document in multiple contexts
Black-and-white text should remain legible in print, but verify the exported PDF anyway. Select text from beginning to end and see if the copied order follows the page. Test links to a portfolio or profile, and remove any that no longer work. If the Word and Google Docs views wrap differently, adjust paragraphs rather than relying on manual line breaks. The final test is whether a reviewer can identify your experience quickly without interpreting design tricks.
